UNHCR warns against Italy and Greece’s immigration policies

The United Nations’ refugee agency, UNHCR, once again is criticizing Italy and Greece for their current politics on illegal migration.

In a statement issued today, the UNHCR claims to be concerned that Italy’s new policy of intercepting migrants at sea may has resulted in failures to honour its obligations to asylum-seekers and in maltreatment of migrants. It says that, since May, Italy has picked up 900 people at sea and returned them to the north African coast from which they sailed.

Simlar concerns has been expressed about Greece, for a number of counts, including its decision to close down a makeshift camp in Patras on 12 July, which left many of its residents, including registered asylum-seekers, without a roof over their heads.

Perhaps, the bureaucrats at the Glass Palace in New York should better take a look at the reality of migration, run by criminal organizations who earn millions of euros a year, on one side, while on the other side it contributes heavily to social turmoil in hosting countries — namely Italy and Greece above all – whose regular residents, citizens or not, are endangered in their peaceful lives by the flood of illegal aliens invading their countries and turning criminals.

Italy and Greece could but take resolute actions against such organizations, moving to cut their earning at the very roots. Lybia and Turkey are known as basis for these criminal organizations, more often than not with the aid and assistance of local governmental institutions. Choice was between moving warships against criminals’ strongholds on Lybian and Turkish coasts, or reaching agreements with the two countries to convince them it is in their interests to stop the criminals.

Italy chose to take on this second, and much longer in time, option: agreements with Lybia have been signed and they are starting to give good results.

It wll take a lot longer before we can tell the plague of illegal migration is uprooted, but for sure it could never be so wth the UNHCR’s systems.
